To cut the expensive roaming charges use "prepaid cards" whih you can buy on site. You get an account you can call with and also a later reload of it is possible. As well you get your own italian phone number where people can call you up.
Please note: It is operating in mobiles without SIM Lock only.
The benefits: No charges for incomming calls, less charges for the caller itself. With that we saved about 60% of our phone charges.

You can buy prepaidcards over the Internet. Also there is an offer e.g. by globilo mobile world. But the set up charges are higher as buying on site, but always cheaper yet as the high roaming charges.
